The Breakfast Club (1985): Stereotyping Identity; Identifying Stereotypes

At its core, John Hughes’ 1985 teen classic is a film about stereotypes and identities. It follows the story of 5 very different teens – or so we think – who must spend a day in detention together. The script reads very much like a play, and there’s no action, no extravagant special effects, not even a change of location.

You can loosely break the film down into 2 acts: act 1 being more focused on the stereotypes and presumed identities of the students, and act 2, taking the chance to uncover those prejudices and assumptions, to identify the stereotypes and recognize that although identity itself is not an island, after enough open dialogue, we can start to see aspects of ourselves in others… and in turn see figments of other people’s identities in ourselves.
