Narrowboats "Thomas Telford" and "Sally" crossing Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, 30.10.09. High angle view.
Another attempt with the pole-mounted Nikon D90. Cruise boat "Thomas Telford" from Llangollen crosses with Aubrey at the helm and Helen and Phil as cabin crew, followed by Peter and Bev on "Sally". The towpath here is about 90 feet above the fields, increasing to nearly 127 feet over the bed of the river Dee. This view shows just why they call it "The Stream in the Sky", and it probably gives the best impression of the approach embankment from Fron, one of the biggest earthworks in Britain before the motorways were built. Charlie the dog just had to get in on the act, and a young lady in a spectacularly colourful hat illuminates the opening seconds!
The noise is from tree trimming and shredding along the riverbank. Please excuse the dive into the towpath at the end; my improvised remote switch didn't work, and Windows Movie Maker is still on the blink!
The "TT" operates daily between Llangollen Wharf (tel. 01978 860702) and Froncysyllte from the start of the Easter holidays to the end of October or, as this year, the first day of November. She cruises through over five miles of glorious scenery, making one two-hour trip each way with a bus connection included for the outward or homeward journey, whichever you choose to take. A commentary and friendly buffet service are provided. There are a few seasonal-themed "mince pie" cruises in December, too.
Also from the Wharf, during the summer season horse drawn boats operate upstream, where power boats cannot go. See other clips on this channel for Tog, Taff, Stanley and Geordie at work!
