Varna is the second largest city in Bulgaria. It is a major economic and cultural center of the country.

Varna is a coastal city with a population of over 300,000 people. The city has been an important seaport since Antiquity and it still maintains its status as the country’s main port today.

The city’s history can be traced back to 5000 BC when it was inhabited by Thracian tribes who called it Odessos. In AD 484, Varna was conquered by the Slavs who called it Varvarin or Varbanovgrad, meaning “the town of Varbar” in Old Bulgarian (Varbar being another name for Dionysus).
