Katowice - Jak Zmieniało Się Miasto

A rephotography comparison between old and present days in the city of Katowice. I mixed parts of old and new photos trying to give You an illusion of being there.
Some photos were taken way over 100 years ago. All the sounds are matching an era the're reffering to
The film features few famous sites like marketplace or Silesian Regional Assembly building, and clearly shows wich parts of the city have changed almost completely and which have not. Few photos were taken during World War 2, some of them in the XIX century. Enjoy!:)

1. Wawelska Street is one of the oldest in the city. Today it is one of the most representative streets and has been changed to a pedestrian area.

2. Warszawska Street is one of the most important streets in the city. Until 1922 and during World War II the street was named Friedrichstraße. In 1848 first city's hotel (Welt's Hotel) was built nearby and Johann Strauss was one of the guests performing there in 1850. Many historical renewed buildings and tenement houses are still there.

3. Market Square in Katowice is a central feature in the city. This market square - the main one in the city, dates to late 19th century. It has been rebuilt several times, with the latest round of changes in 2010 and 2017. Pay attention to an old neon signs on top of the buildings advertising brands which are still present nowadays like Philips or Suchard (today known as Milka).

4. Starowiejska Street was the eastern part of the main street when Katowice was a village. You can see that it has completely been changed except a few remaining buildings (not shown on the film) but the general direction of the street is still the same

5. The building on Kilinskiego Street has the darkest history behind it. During World War II it was occupied by the Germans who designated it to a Schutzpolizei-Schupo headquater. Later after the war it was dedicated to a polish militia.

6. Silesian Regional Assembly building was raised in late 20's of the XX century. During the inter-war period it was one of the largest government buildings in Poland. In the 2 Warld War it was adopted to a german gauleiter's HQ and Reichsgau Oberschlesien. In 1940 a ceremony took place there, celebrating first anniversary of joining Eastern Upper Silesia to the Third Reich. Joseph Goebbels was one of the special guests.

2. Ulica Warszawska to jedna z ważniejszych ulic w mieście. do roku 1922 i podczas 2 Wojny Światowej nosiła nazwę Friedrichstraße. W 1848 powstał tam pierwszy katowicki hotel (Hotel Welts), w którym w 1850 roku gościł Johann Strauss ze swoją orkiestrą. Dziś można tam spotkać wiele zabytkowych budynków i kamienic

3. Rynek w Katowicach - centralna część miasta. Powstał w 19 wieku i wielokrotnie był przebudowywany. Ostatnie zmiany miały miejsce w roku 2010
oraz 2017. Uwagę zwracają reklamy na budynkach w 1935 roku, które odnoszą się często do marek nadal istniejących jak Philips czy Milka (wówczas znana jako Suchard)

4. Ulica Starowiejska - wschodnia część Głównej ulicy Katowic z czasów gdy były one jeszcze wsią. Dziś mocno zmieniona, ale został zachowany jej ogólny kierunek.

5. Budynek przy ul. Kilińskiego kryje w sobie jedne z mroczniejszych tajemnic. Podczas 2 Wojny Światowej zaadoptowany przez Niemców jako siedziba Schutzpolizei-Schupo. Po wojnie użytkowany przez Milicję Obywatelską.

6. Gmach Sejmu Województwa Śląskiego - powstał pod koniec lat 20-tych XX wieku. W okresie międzywojennym był to jeden z większych budynków rządowych w Polsce. W okresie wojennym - siedziba niemieckiego gauleitera. W 1940 miały tu miejsce obchody pierwszej rocznicy przyłączenia wschodniego Górnego Śląska do III Rzeszy i z tej okazji gościł tu Joseph Goebbels.
