How Elite Swimmers Train Front-End Speed in the 100m
Elite swimming isn’t just about endurance — it’s about speed where it matters most.
In Brisbane, I visited the Somerville House Aquatics team at Musgrave Pool to watch one of the most unique front-end speed sessions I’ve seen. Led by Tim Lane (coach of Olympic Champion Cam McEvoy), this squad uses resisted swimming to develop explosive speed for the 100m events.
This session focuses on:
• Front-end speed development
• Resistance training in the water
• 100m race pace skills
• Technical precision under load
Featuring:
Kalani Ireland – 2nd fastest Australian 100m backstroker in 2025 (54.21)
Olivia Hine – 2025 Australian World Junior Team, 26.21 50m fly (AUS 17yo record)
Josephine Crimmins – World Uni Games medallist (26.27 50 fly)
Bailey Stewart – Australian Virtus Global Games representative (S14)
If you’re a competitive swimmer, coach, or swim nerd — this session will change how you think about speed training.
