**Who They Were**

Drummer Mick Tucker had known Connolly for years — the two had come up together in a band called Wainwright's Gentlemen, which had briefly featured a young Ian Gillan before he left to join Deep Purple. Bassist Steve Priest and guitarist Andy Scott completed the lineup. In January 1968, Connolly and Tucker broke away to form their own group.

**The Chinnichap Machine**
In 1970, Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman entered the picture through producer Phil Wainman and RCA Records. Chinn and Chapman wrote the A-sides. Every single one. The hits came fast: "Funny Funny" reached number 13 in the UK in 1971. "Co-Co" reached number 2. "Little Willy" hit number 4. "Wig-Wam Bam" hit number 4. "Block Buster!" spent five weeks at number one. By 1974, Chinn and Chapman were also writing for Mud, Suzi Quatro, and Smokie — running a hit factory that treated Sweet as one of several interchangeable revenue streams.

**The Escape**
Sweet's one opening was the B-side — Chinnichap controlled the A-sides but ignored the flip. The band used it to develop their own songwriting, quietly, while no one was paying attention. In 1974, Sweet released Sweet Fanny Adams — the first album with the majority of tracks written by the band. Desolation Boulevard followed, split evenly between Chinnichap and self-written material. Then "Fox on the Run" in 1975 — written entirely by the band, reached number 5 in the United States and number 2 in the UK. Give Us a Wink and Off the Record followed as fully self-written albums.

**The Cost**
In the summer of 1974, Brian Connolly was badly beaten outside a nightclub in Staines. The damage to his voice was permanent. Compounded by years of heavy drinking, it worsened through the late 1970s. On February 23, 1979, Connolly left Sweet. Andy Scott, Steve Priest, and Mick Tucker continued but never recaptured the commercial heights. Connolly spent the following years on the nostalgia circuit. Brian Connolly died on February 9, 1997, in Slough, Berkshire, of kidney and liver failure. He was 51. Mick Tucker died of leukemia in 2002 at 54. Steve Priest died in 2020 at 72. Primary Wave Music later acquired Nicky Chinn's publishing catalog — the songs Sweet performed but never owned are still generating royalties today.
