But first, The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity says it’s started processing the $300 Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) payments.

People collecting unemployment should see these payments hitting their accounts along with their underlying state benefits.

DEO also says it’s still working on implementing the continuation of PEUC and PUA.

The department stated, “CONNECT will not be available Sat. January 16th through Mon. January 18th.”

They are using that time to implement the CARES Act programs, process payments, and send necessary correspondence to claimants including tax documentation and the site will be back up on Tuesday, January 19th.

These programs are retroactive to the week ending January 2, 2021.

The DEO says you will be able to request benefits soon so just hang on tight for more information.
Up next, with more than half of New York restaurants hanging on a thread, New York Major signed new legislation that effectively ends at-will employment for fast-food restaurants in New York City.

This prevents employers from discharging employees or reducing their hours unless the employer has “just cause,” which is described as unsatisfactorily performing their duty.

According to Ogletree Deakins, a labor and employment law firm, “this effort makes New York City the first jurisdiction in the country to pass job protections for employees within a particular industry.”

An at-will employee can walk out the door right now, with absolutely no prior notice, and there's nothing legally the employer can do.

Employers in at-will relationships can also end an employment relationship without notice, but they can't do it for illegal reasons.

While this might affect some businesses, it will also protect employees from getting reduced hours or let go unexpectedly.
And finally, Gov. Phil Murphy has announced that New Jersey workers waiting for the extra $300 in weekly jobless benefits should hopefully receive these payments on Jan. 19th.

The Department of Labor plans to process the supplemental benefits this weekend, and pass out payments several days later via direct deposit or prepaid debit cards depending on a person’s bank.

Spokesperson Delli Santi stated, “Claimants should continue to certify for weekly benefits according to the schedule. No one will miss any weeks of eligibility.”

Any person claiming at least $1 in state benefits is eligible for the supplemental $300 a week.

About 33,000 people exhausted their federal and state benefits before the stimulus was signed.
