Manchester leaders 'unanimously reject' Tier 3 of England's coronavirus levels

The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, says Northern areas are 'being set up as canaries in the coal mine'.

The city is currently labelled as high and the discussions to move to very high are ongoing.

He said the government was sacrificing jobs and prosperity in the north-west to protect other areas from being subjected to a full national lockdown in England.

Mr Burnham also demanded a 'full and fair' furlough at 80% of salary, and compensation for businesses.
