Lawrence Romanosky does a deep dive into the Jaguar XJ6 that was produced in the 1995/1996 model years. This was the 2nd major revision of the XJ-40 platform, and the last Jaguar with an in-line 6 Cylinder engine, and the last Jaguar not to use Ford parts.
About The Jaguar (X300/X330) XJ6
Launched in 1968, the XJ is Jaguar’s large sedan famous for “Grace, Space and Pace”. It was offered in a 4-door sedan, with short and long wheel base, and a 2-door pillarless Coupe. Jaguar offered both the in-line 6 and V12 engines in each body style. In 1988 the XJ6 was replaced by a completely new car, - the XJ40. It featured a new family of 24V 6 cylinder powerplants (AJ6 for Advanced Jaguar 6) which replaced the classic Jaguar twin-cam 6 that had been in production since 1948. The styling was heavily revised - being much less curvaceous than its predecessor. The XJ12 carried on to 1992, with both new and old body styles being sold concurrently.

Jaguar was purchased by Ford in 1990, who oversaw the development of the XJ40’s replacement, the X300 (X330 was the LWB), which debuted in late 1994 as a 1995 model. The X300 went back to the traditional Jaguar design language of 4 individual headlights and a more curvaceous body. This vehicle benefitted from Ford’s quality control, though retained Jaguar components. The X300 XJ series was the last Jaguar not to use Ford parts, and the last Jaguar to feature a straight 6-cylinder engine.

The revised AJ6 engine, now called the AJ 16 was tweeked and featured individual coil units for each cylinder, and a revised engine management system. The V12 engine was available in the 1995 model year as a SWB, and in 1996 as a LWB.
The X300 was sold as a Jaguar in North America and as either a Jaguar or Daimler in Europe. There were short and long wheel bases. For North America the Vanden Plas name was used for the highest trim level. There was a supercharged Jaguar Sport model called the XJR.

For 1997, the XJ series received the new Jaguar AJ8 V8 engine, and was the 3rd and final adaptation of the XJ-40 platform. It was produced until 2003. This XJ was only offered with Ford based
