Cyclone Narelle Makes Landfall - Tropical Weather Bulletin

After reaching an impressive peak early on Thursday, Cyclone Narelle has made landfall as a strong Category 3 on the Saffir Simpson Scale (Category 4 Australian scale) with winds of nearly 200kph. The storm is now weakening as it moves inland and may lose hurricane equivalent status by the time it enters the Gulf of Carpentaria later today or tomorrow. The storm peaked with winds near 145mph (230kph) with a clear eye, although this did not last for very long before the eye started to lose shape again.

Narelle isn't finished yet however, with an extensive future still likely in store for it. Cyclone Watches are now posted for part of the Northern Territory, with the storm likely to strengthen a little and cross over the Top End and potentially pass near Darwin, before moving out over the Indian Ocean where a third intensification phase may take place.

Elsewhere, an area of interest is starting to take shape near the Solomon Islands, and chances of development are now rated at near 50%. The system could become another significant storm for the region, with storm force winds possible for New Caledonia this weekend or early next week. The potential storm could reach hurricane strength as it sinks southwards, and blow up in size as it turns extratropical later next week as it accelerates towards the south.

No other areas of interest are on the immediate horizon at the moment.
