Handlung des Games: Kratos macht sich auf die Suche nach seinem tot geglaubten Bruder Deimos, dabei kämpft sich der neue Kriegsgott von der sagenumwobenen Stadt Atlantis bis in das Reich des Totengottes Thanatos durch. In Ghost of Sparta erfährt man mehr über Kratos Jugend und Kindheit in Sparta sowie über das Leben seines Bruders Deimos.

Chronologisch betrachtet ist dieses Spiel ein Sequel von God of War (2005) und die Handlung spielt sich zudem vor den Ereignissen von God of War 2 (2007) ab.
