sewer overflow xmas day 2010

This is a video of the sewer inspection pit next door at no 3 East st. This happened after a brief down pour chistmas day.
The stench is that bad we have to close all the windows and doors. Not great seeing as its 35C.
While this pit has popped its 80kg lid, the pressure is that high that we cannot use any water in the house, ie toilets, showers, sinks, dishwasher and washing machine as our waste water cannot access the sewerage system. if we do flush toilets it will eventually back up and overflow into the house. since we have been here the sewer pit has popped its lid about 6 times. our problem is that if/when we do flood, the water from the creek will come into the house downstairs as well as the raw sewerage from the sewer pit. this is not good in many ways. dave next door has been on to the council many times over the past few years and nothing has been done. a plumber has said the reason the pressure is so high is because many residents have piped their storm water ie roof downpipe into the sewerage system which is illegal.
A plumber did fit a reflux valve which is basically a one way flap which lets our waste waste water out but closes to stop town sewerage into our line which is what used to happen. Before the reflux valve was installed we had town waste come up through the drains and downstairs toilet.
