Green Hydrogen for Sustainable Forestry | Challoch Energy Project (WSRID Phase 2)

Can green hydrogen help decarbonise forestry in Mid Wales?

This innovative project, led by Challoch Energy Ltd, is exploring how locally generated wind power can be used to produce green hydrogen — offering a cleaner alternative to diesel for forestry machinery and transport.

Supported by Growing Mid Wales through the Welsh Government's Whole System Research for Innovation and Decarbonisation (WSRID) programme, the project is part of a wider effort to develop practical, low-carbon solutions for rural industries.

Key areas of focus include:

- Producing green hydrogen using local renewable energy
- Reducing reliance on diesel in forestry operations
- Identifying suitable sites for hydrogen production and infrastructure
- Supporting a more resilient, low-carbon rural economy

Forestry plays a vital role in Mid Wales, supporting thousands of jobs, and this project aims to explore how sustainable energy solutions can help secure its future.

In this video, Dr Simon Minett, Managing Director of Challoch Energy Ltd, shares more about the project and its potential to transform the sector.
