James and I lived right next to each other and his bedroom
window was just across mine; but we were really never friends,
at least not in the eyes of our families and everyone in school.
He was handsome but he was a total snob and for me, he was the
neighbor I didn’t care about until that one summer afternoon in
5th grade when a paper airplane landed in my room. I looked out
the window to see where it came from and I saw James by his
window. He told me to open the paper and what was written on it
was a wonderful love poem. That started our secret exchange of
love notes through paper airplanes that we flew to each other’s
windows. Other than that, we never hung out with each other. My
father was a very stern man and as the only daughter and the
youngest in the family, he and my five brothers were overprotective of me. Whenever any boy knocked at our door, he’d
face him with a shot gun in hand and drive him away, even if it
was just an innocent classmate. I didn’t want to cause James
trouble so we kept our relationship a secret. Only our very few
trusted friends knew and sometimes, they helped James and I meet
in secret.
Those were exciting times, but it didn’t last very long. As we
were finishing high school, my dad caught us kissing in the
cinema. Dad had been having suspicions since he caught a
glimpse of a paper airplane flying from James’ window to mine.
He secretly followed me and we were caught in the act. He was
furious and literally dragged me from the movie house back to
our house. James followed us trying to explain everything along
the way but my dad punched him in the face and told him to stay
away from me. That was the most embarrassing moment of my life.
My dad then told me how he had hoped for a better life for me
than marrying a fisherman’s son who had no future. Everybody in
the neighborhood knew that James was not going to college and
was going to work with his father as a fisherman after high
school. I just couldn’t believe that my family would look down
on him for that. My dad forbade me to see James again and to
make sure we never had any opportunity to meet or talk...
