Chiari Malformation and Treatment
A Chiari malformation is an abnormal connection between the bottom of the brain and the spinal column that often causes headaches with or without neck pain. Although the severity of this condition can range, the most common type of Chiari malformation is Chiari 1, where the bottom part of the brain — known as the cerebellum — pushes down into the spinal cord. This type of malformation is most accurately diagnosed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that can also detect any associated abnormalities.
When a child needs surgery, the goal is to provide space for the portion of the brain that extends into the spinal canal and provide better flow of cerebrospinal fluid, which is an essential part of the brain and nervous system.
In this video, learn more about surgery for Chiari malformations, the surgical process before, during and after the procedure, and how Children’s Hospital Colorado can help kids with Chiari malformations.
