Takaichi wins LDP leadership race, likely to become Japan's first female prime minister

Sanae Takaichi is set to be Japan's first female prime minister after her win as the leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Saturday.

Takaichi said she planned to honour an investment deal with U.S. President Donald Trump that lowered his punishing tariffs in return for Japanese taxpayer-backed investment, having previously mooted the possibility of redoing it.

The election of Sanae Takaichi is a “shift towards the right” for Japan’s political sphere, Japanese politics expert Tina Burrett, professor of political science at Sophia University, said.

"Given Takeshi's own profile as somebody who's a social conservative, who has quite 'un-feminist' views on women's capabilities and what roles they should play in society, I don't hold my breath for any radical changes under her premiership,” Burrett added.
