The answer is inodes.
Every file on Linux has two things: a name you can see,
and an inode underneath — the actual data, the real file.
When an update comes in, Linux doesn't touch the running file.
It creates a brand new inode and quietly points the name to it.
The old program keeps running, completely unaware anything changed.
