Smart fan control via RF cloning remote, relays, NodeMCU, ESPHome, Home Assistant!

I managed to automate a non-smart fan using some spare parts from a previous project. This was a fairly simple task with good results!
First I cloned my existing fan remote using a cheap eBay cloning remote (433MHz). Next, I took the remote control board and wired it up to a 4-way relay board. Next, I configured a NodeMCU with ESPHome so that it controlled the relay board via GPIO outputs. Finally, I setup the ESPHome device in Home Assistant so it presents itself as a fan. This was achieved using the "Template Fan" feature of Home Assistant. I boxed everything up neatly and power it all with a 12V 1.5A wall wart. I'm certain there is a simpler and easier way to do it but you can't beat the value of using up spare parts on a weekend ;)
