Whiplash - Drum Cover in VR (Paradiddle)

After more than a year since my latest VR drum cover, I'm back with the most ambitious one I've recorded yet: Whiplash by Hank Levy! Just like my previous covers, I performed it using the drumming app I've been developing for VR, Paradiddle (http://paradiddleapp.com). It's currently available on Steam Early Access for the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

My goal with this cover specifically was to test some of the more advanced features that I've added to the app over the past year. I'm using electronic drum pedals to control the kick and hi-hat drums in the app, through the MIDI integration. I connected the MIDI output from the app to Superior Drummer 3, which allowed me to use some more professional drum set sounds, as well as do all the audio mixing. It was my first time really delving in depth to audio mixing and working with MIDI files, and it was a ton of fun to be able to tune the drum sounds to my own liking after I recorded everything. I used the newly added LIV (https://liv.tv/) mixed reality recording/streaming integration of the app to record everything in mixed reality, which really let me present the app in a much more interesting way in combination with the first person view. I also wanted to challenge myself musically, and so decided to take on Whiplash, a song I didn't know how to play on physical drums. I must say that the song was deceptively simple; only when I started playing through it did I realize all the little accents and ghost notes that made it much trickier to perform in one solid take.
