Inside Griot's Garage - Ferrari F1-2000

Richard Griot shows us a piece of motorsports history, Ferrari's championship winning F1-2000.

The Ferrari F1-2000 was the company's 47th Formula 1 design. The car was a direct descendant of the F300 and F399 used in the previous two seasons, with some marked improvements.

It utilizes the same basic gearbox, coupled to a new V-10 engine (code named 050) with a wider V-angle that improved and lowered the center of gravity of the car. The motor displaced just under three liters, and could make between 770 and 850 bhp. Bolted transversely on the engine is a seven speed semi-automatic gearbox, that is operated by paddles mounted behind the steering wheel. The transverse mounting of the gearbox helps keep most of the weight within the wheelbase for a better balance.

Michael Schumacher drove the F1-2000 to his third World Drivers' Title, Ferrari's first in 21 years. It also defended Ferrari's constructors' crown, and signified the start of the team's dominance throughout the first half of the decade.

This particular car, chassis #203, won the Canadian Grand Prix and finished second at the French Grand Prix and Hungarian Grand Prix with Michael Schumacher at the helm. Rubens Barrichello also drove this car, placing second at the U.S. Grand Prix and fourth at the Japanese Grand Prix
