Cairo was once a prosperous and thriving community at the juncture of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. But a troubled past, which has been much discussed and documented elsewhere, led to its precipitous decline.

For years, the bulk of Cairo's commercial district sat empty and collapsing, block after block of urban blight. Today, much of it is gone, bulldozed and hauled away, leaving just empty fields along Commercial Avenue, punctuated by a few remaining beautiful antique relics.
