In this video, I'm jamming in the key of C with my looper pedal, demonstrating a jump blues style. I start by showing the chord progression I'm using - C7, F9, and G9 - creating that classic urban, big city blues sound with a steady rhythm and some diminished chord transitions.
The main focus of today's lesson is how to approach soloing over this progression using what I call a "blues box" - staying primarily between the 8th and 9th frets. I demonstrate how you can create compelling melodies by using just three or four strategic notes, switching between major and minor tonalities for that authentic blues feel. I show how simple bends, stretches, and phrasing can give you a lot of mileage without having to move all over the fretboard.
Taking inspiration from players like B.B. King and Eric Clapton, I emphasize that playing with intention and finding compelling melodies matters more than complexity.
