Success doesn't have shortcuts | Abhinav Anand | TEDxIITKharagpur

In this entertaining yet highly relatable talk, the speaker narrates the story of how he went from being an average boy coming from a middle-class Indian family to having a full-fledged career on YouTube. He starts by saying how he opted to prepare for the IIT-JEE entrance examinations like every other student after his high school, and how his lack of aptitude for engineering caused him to fail miserably in almost every engineering exam. However, he went on to pursue a degree in Civil engineering, solely because everyone else wanted him to do so.

Inspired by his love for shooting and movies in college, the speaker ventured into short-film making when he had absolutely no idea what it required or called for. He started creating small movies and videos, and gained fame in hi college for his work. Inspired by the legendary director Anurag Kashyap’s “Gangs of Wasseypur”, the speaker decided to create something of similar nature. He ended up creating a short parody of the same movie, which garnered around 1.5M views and was endorsed by Mr. Kashyap himself on Twitter.

The speaker realized that he wanted his career to be in short-film and web series direction. However, his parents visualized him doing a civil engineering job that would ensure a steady income and safety of future. The speaker narrates how he could not gather the courage to express his desire to his parents, and decided to walk along the path they visualized for him.

In a comic way, the speaker describes how disappointment and frustration built up as he continued his job as a civil engineer, until one day he decided he had had enough and ventured secretly into securing a job in the field of digital media with TVF. With the new job offer, he now confronted his parents, making his desires and ambition clear, and much to his surprise, his parents expressed concern over his decision rather than anger or disappointment. The speaker makes a point that it would be a better choice to try out the new field and make a decision for himself rather than never trying it out and living with regret the entire life.

The speaker talks about his struggles during a 1-year period in which he put in intense hard work and dedication to blossom his career as a YouTuber, finally earning the acceptance of his family. He presents himself as the best example that with the right attitude and work, anyone can achieve anything they put their heart into.

One must dare to dream, and should not be afraid to dream about anything. However, patience, mental strength and hard work are a must to convert your dreams to reality; there are no other shortcuts to realising your dreams. In the chase for your dreams, you may get tired and decide to give up, but keep in mind that you might be giving up right when you were the closest to realising your dreams.
