The $500 Drone Destroying $5 Million Tanks — FPV Drones Explained

A $500 drone built from racing parts is destroying
tanks worth $5 million. The math is brutal, and
that's exactly why it works.

In Ukraine, soldiers figured out that a commercial
racing drone could carry an RPG warhead. They strap
it underneath with zip ties and a 3D-printed mount.
Two hours of work. Under $500 total. The operator
puts on goggles, sees what the drone sees, and flies
it at 150 km/h straight into the weakest point on
a tank. No second chance. One dive. One hit.

One drone hits the tracks. The tank can't move. A
second hits the engine. The crew runs. A third
finishes it. Three drones. $1,500. The tank cost
$5 million.

A NATO official confirmed that drones under $1,000
destroyed two-thirds of all Russian tanks lost in
combat. In December 2025 alone, 35,000 Russian
soldiers were struck by drones. Both sides now build
over 100,000 FPV drones every month.

The newest evolution is fiber optic control — a cable
thinner than fishing line that makes the drone immune
to all electronic jamming. That same cable now costs
$2,500 instead of $300, because Meta and Google need
it for AI data centers.

The most terrifying variant is the Zhdun — "the one
who waits." It lands in the grass, powers down, and
sits invisible for hours. When a vehicle passes, it
launches and strikes before anyone reacts. No signal.
No sound. Nothing.
