They called them expendable
History celebrates the cure for tuberculosis , but it forgets the women who kept hope alive long enough for that cure to matter. This video uncovers the untold story of the Black Angels, the nearly 300 African American nurses who stepped into Sea View Hospital when everyone else walked away.
Sea View was the largest TB hospital in the nation, and when white staff abandoned the most dangerous wards, officials turned to Black nurses who had been denied opportunities across the Jim Crow South. Women like Virginia Allen and Edna Sutton arrived seeking better work and found themselves confronting exhausting shifts, prejudice, and a hospital on the edge of collapse.
Their compassion kept patients stable, their hands kept wards running, and their persistence allowed experimental treatments in 1951 , including early antibiotics like streptomycin to succeed. Researchers earned the headlines, but the Black Angels provided the care that made recovery possible.
This video honors the women history tried to erase and reminds us that every medical breakthrough stands on the shoulders of those who worked in silence.
