Every year, on the 19th of June, communities across the United States come together to celebrate a significant day in American history. Hey! It’s Dan Zimmerman. Welcome to another Illustrate to Educate video, where we’ll briefly explore the history, celebrations, and traditions of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, or Jubilee Day, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. The holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that the enslaved people in Texas were free by executive decree from the U.S. government.

The Emancipation Proclamation had been issued more than two years earlier, on January 1, 1863, but it had not been enforced in Texas. In fact, many enslaved people in Texas did not know they were free until June 19, 1865.

Juneteenth celebrations typically include parades, picnics, and other public events. Many people also attend church services or other religious gatherings to commemorate the holiday. Juneteenth is a time to celebrate freedom and to reflect on the legacy of slavery and the ongoing struggle for racial equality.
