A House That Ascends: The Sensory Journey of Cascade House

The timber cottage, a relic of Paddington's early 20th century, clung to the western slope, a silent observer of the neighborhood's gradual evolution. Within its weathered walls resided a family of five, their lives a vibrant tapestry of childhood exuberance and familial warmth. They yearned for a home that fostered independence, a space where their children could roam freely yet remain within the comforting periphery of parental sight. More than just a dwelling, they envisioned a stage for shared meals, boisterous games, and the simple joy of picnicking, not just on the ground, but under a leafy canopy, and even, metaphorically, amongst the clouds.

John Ellway, the architect entrusted with their dream, faced a unique challenge: to reconcile the sloping terrain with the family’s desire for seamless connection to the outdoors, while simultaneously mitigating the harsh glare of the afternoon sun. The existing cottage, with its robust hardwood structure, held a quiet dignity, a testament to its enduring craftsmanship. Ellway recognized the value in preservation, opting for a minimal intervention, focusing primarily on the reconstruction of the rear "lean-to." This strategic decision not only respected the building's history but also aligned with the family's budget.

The site's dramatic four-meter level change became a pivotal design element, a narrative woven into the very fabric of the house. The entry sequence, rather than being a single, imposing ascent, was artfully broken into a series of split levels, creating moments of pause and transition. From the street level, where bicycles and prams found their place, a gentle rise led to the main entry, opening into a welcoming meals area and courtyard. Sliding screened doors dissolved the boundary between indoors and outdoors, extending the living space into a verdant, grassy courtyard, the heart of the family's envisioned picnic spot.
