Textiles are anything that is made up of fibers or fabrics. Textile designing is the process of planning & producing a fabric’s appearance and structure. It is the creation of designs or patterns that appear on knitted and printed fabrics keeping in mind the type of fabric and its use. It includes textile structure that is deciding what kind of fibers a textile should be made of or what kind of threads to weave together for a specific look & feel or create pattern. They also specify the dyeing method, the use of dyes to color fibers or fabric surface to get the desired effect.

Fabrics are used in the apparel industry to manufacture clothes and accessories, for domestic purposes like table clothes, bedspreads, curtains, towels, cushion covers, and for home decor. Hence prints play an important role in selecting a fabric. This is where a textile designer comes into the scene.

To enter this field, you can pursue graduation in textile designing after class 12th, from any stream followed by post-graduation courses. Depending on the institutes you may have to clear entrance exam to seek admission for this course. Some institutes also offer diploma courses in textile designing which can be pursued after class 12th.

Along with the required educational qualification You also need to have knowledge of yarn making, dyeing techniques, weaving, understanding and knowing about different types of looms, knitting machines, printing process which includes blocks, stencils, roller, silk screens. You also need to have certain personality traits like eye for detail, creative thinking, Decision making skills and patience communication skills.

Career prospects are available in designing studios, Cottage and small-scale industries, khadi, hand-loom, jute, and craft development organizations., fashion garments or export units, textile designing and printing units, Textile mills, Textile manufacturing units, teaching or you can also work as freelancer. Traditionally, textile designers dealt only with colors, patterns and material aesthetics. But nowadays, textile designers are indulging in the sourcing, trend forecasting, marketing, and even branding of fabrics.

Textile designing is an integral part of fashion industry. Adapting to changing customer needs, latest technologies, providing timely outputs, and understanding market demands are some mundane responsibilities of a fabric designer.

To conclude the world of textile designing is not just limited to creating patterns and colors for fabrics anymore, a designer can now specialize in color, computer designs, creating single templates like pictures, textile art and so on.
