What If Biology Is Just a Running a Complex System?

Something I can't stop thinking about: inside every one of your cells, right now, hundreds of quintillions of tiny machines are reading DNA and building you out of it — and they're doing it badly, on purpose. They misread about once every ten thousand letters. That's not a flaw they're fighting. It's the fuel. The randomness is the power source.

And last year a research lab taught an AI to read and write that same four-letter code, without ever showing it a biology textbook. It started writing brand-new genes that actually worked when they were built and dropped into a living cell.

The more I sit with both of those, the harder it gets to keep a clean line between "life" and "computation." My new Notes from the Vault episode is me trying to walk that line honestly — with the companion essay on the Substack for anyone who wants the long version.
