Certainly NOT built from scratch, but this did require a good amount of effort.
If I had to do it again, I would just by a cheap DIY tele kit and go from there.

First I routed out most the body and left about 1 inch on all the side walls.
Sand down the height same amount as your top wood of choice.

Cut top wood to shape and drill out sound hole are your desired location.
Glue on the top.

Sand everything smooth and pretty.

Install neck and strings and play!
