Drafting the Trouser Block using Natalie Bray's method
It’s important to pre-shrink fabrics before cutting patterns to ensure the finished garment keeps its intended measurements after cleaning or steaming.

How to Preshrink Fabric Without Washing
This method is common in tailoring, couture, and production houses when washing is not ideal.
A. Steam Shrinking with a Steam Iron
Best for cotton, linen, viscose, wool, and blends.
HOW TO DO IT :
1. Lay the fabric flat on an ironing table.
2. Hold your steam iron slightly above the fabric (do not press down).
3. Blast it with steam slowly, section by section.
4. Allow each section to cool before moving it.
5. Do not stretch or pull the fabric while steaming.
Why it works:
Moist heat relaxes the fibers and brings the fabric to its natural, settled size.
■
■
B. Steam Shrinking with a Garment Steamer
Best for delicate fabrics, lace, chiffon, organza, suiting fabrics.
HOW TO DO IT:
1. Hang the fabric.
2. Run the steamer vertically from top to bottom, letting the steam penetrate.
3. Let fabric rest for a few hours before cutting.
■
■
C. London Shrink (Traditional Tailoring Method for Wool)
Best for: Wool, cashmere, suiting fabrics
HOW TO DO IT:
1. Place a damp (not wet) cotton cloth or sheet on a table.
2. Lay the wool fabric on top of the damp cloth.
3. Roll both layers together loosely.
4. Wrap the roll in plastic to keep moisture in.
5. Leave for 24–48 hours to allow the wool to absorb moisture slowly.
6. Unroll and let it air-dry flat before cutting.
■
■
D. Using a Professional Fabric Steamer/Industrial Ironing Table
If you have industrial equipment in your sewing hub:
Use the vacuum table + steam iron to steam the entire yardage.
This is the fastest and most uniform preshrinking method.
■
■
E. Heat Setting (for Synthetic Fabrics)
Best for polyester, nylon, spandex blends — which don’t shrink with water but can be heat-set.
HOW TO DO IT:
Place fabric on a flat surface.
Use an iron on medium heat, pressing lightly with no steam.
Or tumble dry on low heat for a few minutes.
IMPORTANT:
Too much heat can melt or warp the fibers. Test first.
