Making sense of KEYS & MODES for fiddle tunes ✨ Major, Minor, Mixolydian, Dorian

For the purposes of this video, I'm referring to major and minor as modes, but the mode that corresponds to our typical major scale is called ionian, and the mode that corresponds to the natural minor scale is called aeolian (so you might hear me using the term major instead of ionian or minor instead of aeolian!).

In this video when I talk about major tunes, I'm talking about tunes that are primarily in the aeolian mode, mixolydian tunes, tunes that are primarily in mixolydian mode, dorian tunes, tunes that are primarily in the dorian mode, and minor tunes, tunes that are primarily in the ionian mode.

There's more to it than this - you can even call both ionian and mixolydian "major modes" and both aeolian and dorian "minor modes" - but feel free to search the internet for more information!

Please note that I’m a folk musician and fiddler, and I don’t consider myself a classical violinist. In my experience of the folk tradition, techniques tend to be somewhat informal, variable, and flexible, so take what I say with a grain of salt :) My thoughts on fiddling are based on my own personal musical experience. If you’re looking for more formal violin technique and instruction, there are other resources out there that are geared towards that!

These videos are not intended as a substitute for the advice of a medical professional (when it comes to any thoughts on techniques such as posture, hand placement, etc).

Happy fiddling everyone!
