In this video Kale (@kalesbroccoli) breaks down the important aspects of paddling into waves when you learn to surf. And although this is a tricky component of the sport for beginners, it is also a very common sticky area for intermediate surfers, too.

Being able to read & predict what the waves will do, as we keep reiterating, is one of theist important aspects of beginner surfing and learning to surf. Experience & time in the water is the best way to build up this skill, however there are some very fundamental points to watch out for when it comes to paddling for those waves & actually catching them.

Being close to the curl but not too far away from it (the perfect take off zone) is key, as is ensuring you put in enough strokes to match the momentum of the wave.
