Adoption:Hard Questions & Honest Answers (That You Won't Get From an Adoption Agency)

Okay so here it is! I just want to make very clear that I love all of my parents and all sides of my family. I do not resent my adopted parents for adopting me and I do not resent my biological parents for having me adopted. I know this video touches mostly on the negative aspects but that is because it is often the neglected side of adoption.

There has been a viral video going around where a little girl recounts her adoption and it is a very feel-good, happy video. While nice and heartwarming, it's not what adoption is really about. Unfortunately for that little girl, we have done her a great disservice by circulating a personal video at such a young age to continue to propagate adoption romanticization.

Adoption starts off with trauma, by relinquishing your birthright: your family and your history. That is a tragedy and I am trying to get society to accept that. Sometimes it's just the way things have to be, but that doesn't mean we can't empathize, recognize, and uplift adoptees.

I also want to clarify about adoption jokes, as a jokester myself, I don't mind those jokes if they're done well. I don't mean a specific joke to your friend or even a joke that involves an adoptee, it's the trope "you're adopted haha" or "your mom didn't want you haha" (yes I have been told this before) that I have beef with. Only other bastard children can call me a bastard, you dig?

Anyways I hope this was enlightening or helpful to anyone wanting to know more about it or wanting to hear an adoptee perspective. Like I said, this is just MY perspective, but I have spoken to hundreds of others in the past few years so I did try to incorporate their opinions too.
