GoPro Driving Time Lapse Comparison | Video Mode vs. Photo Mode

In this video I was conducting a test to see what mode (photo or video) gave the best results while capturing a driving time lapse also known as a drivelapse on the GoPro Hero 4. I recorded approximately a 30 minute drive while in video timelapse mode at an interval of 1 second and then a 30 minute drive while in photo timelapse mode with a 1 second interval as well. Both scenarios produced amazing results and I was quit pleased with the GoPro's drivelapse capabilities.

Both modes have their strengths and weaknesses. The video mode was quick and easy, once the drive was done and I stopped recording, instantly there was a 4K video waiting, ready to be viewed and shared with friends. When the photo mode was done I was left with about 1000 image frames that needed to be uploaded to my computer, edited and compiled into a video. This can time consuming and tricky, especially if your new to timelapse editing. The final results of the photo mode drivelapse are quite stunning.

So for quick easy driving time lapses that are ready to share and view instantly, video mode is best. For a drive lapse with crisp detail and beautiful colour, photo mode is your best bet if you don't need it right away and are comfortable with the editing process. Either way you choose you will have a beautiful high quality driving timelapse created with your GoPro.

If your going to be creating GoPro driving timelapses make sure you stick with a GoPro brand suction cup for mounting your camera. More secure and worry free than some after market brands.
