Hong Kong: Media tycoon Jimmy Lai denied bail after being charged under security law

Media tycoon Jimmy Lai was brought to West Kowloon Court in Hong Kong on Saturday on a prisoner transport vehicle. The 73-year-old was denied bail after being charged the previous day under the security law.

A large number of police officers stood outside the court, next to journalists and pro-Beijing supporters, as well as supporters of Jimmy Lai, who were chanting slogans such as 'Human rights above the regime, repeal the National Security Law' and "Support Jimmy Lai, no political suppression."

Lai's elder son Lai Kin Yang Timothy was seen entering the court building, followed by press members.

Lai is being held on fraud charges and was accused of endangering national security for tweeting against Beijing when he called for sanctions against Hong Kong authorities and China.

The media tycoon's case was adjourned to April 16.

In August 2020, Hong Kong police arrested media tycoon and founder of Apple Daily Jimmy Lai and raided the company's headquarters in what has become the highest-profile case under the new controversial national security law adopted in Beijing.

Lai was released on bail a day after, as protests in his support broke out across Hong Kong.
