SURPRISINGLY HARD: Benighted | Implore The Negative | With TAB

Soooo, as you can read in the intro, I took a long time thinking about uploading it. But first things first, the tabs!

The mistakes I'm talking about are in Bar 17 in the tab. When I transcribed this song, I actually used the official video that Emmanuel has on his channel. I focused too hard on the visuals and it looked like he played everything a fret higher, so 3-2-1 instead of 2-1-0. (The gallop also looks different in his video compared to what I can hear on the record) That's why I played everything like that in my video. It does clash with the actual record, which I only noticed after recording. I tried mixing my way around it and now it kinda works, but sounds more like a dissonant version, like if Defeated Sanity would play that part haha

Those ringing notes in Bar 15 might also be wrong. I hear some kind of minor 2nd dissonance but the fingering looks like the one in the tab. The last difference is in the ending. I didn't notice that the rhythm of the notes slightly changes, so I basically repeat the same pattern in my playthrough. Those were basically the mistakes I'm aware of.

So the reason I'm still uploading it is, that I really liked my playing here. It's also one of the rare cases of a good first take, as you can see on my monitor behind me. I seldomly have a good first take, so I usually already have recorded takes on my tracks. After recording, and thinking I had a good take without any mistakes (harhar) , I put new strings on the guitar for D standard. And then when I made the tab and mixed the song and noticed the errors, I was like, fuck, what now!? Well, three weeks later I was ready to upload it haha. The biggest takeaway from this story is, that you shouldn't rush a video like that and double-check everything before you actually record one!

There is an actual backstory to me doing this song! The second guitar player of Benighted left the band last year, and my immediate thought was, that I should hit them up. But there were two issues.

1.I was not that familiar with their music, and I'm not into that genre that much anymore (or so I thought)
2.I never had any luck contacting a band about joining them. So if you guys think I swim in requests from bands, nope, not at all, like nothing.

To point 1. I recently checked out their last album "Obscene Repressed" and I was positively suprised, especially by this song. The songwriting always has interesting ideas, so the music never got boring. Which is actually the reason I usually don't like that kind of death-grind. It gets boring quickly. But not Obscene Repressed. Definitely refreshing to hear for me. So check that album out! The guitar playing was also a surprise. Which led me to actually doing this song.

It was supposed to be an audition tape. But like I wrote, I never had any luck contacting bands. Usually it only works if the band knows about you and contacts you. Which is how I got my session jobs in the past. I actually got all of my last jobs the old-school way, phone text messages haha.

Now to the song! It's quite interesting. Super fun to play. But if you play that one section with down-picking, then it's also super hard. Well, the whole song is a challenge. It definitely has tech death vibes. I wouldn't actually play the first power chord section with down-picking though. I think that's exactly the tempo where a good hard alternate picking will sound better. It's also almost impossible to down-pick this. I'd never do that in a live-situation. Like, if your hands are just slightly cold, or you have some kind of blood-flow issues, then this part will be impossible, and it would turn into a muddy mess IMO

The other section with the string skipping, that one actually has to be played with down-picking. So if you guys attempt to learn and play this song, then sure, you can skip down-picking the power-chord section in the intro, but you definitely have to stick to it with that string skipping part. The reason is the pick attack he has on those open notes. It's a slightly sharp pick attack, almost like a pinch harmonic, but not quite. And that's only possible with down-picking. Joe Haley of Psycroptic also does this a lot. Not doing a full pinch harmonic but having this kind of accentuated sharp sounding pick attack. Not sharp in like pitch, but sharp in timbre and tone.

Enjoy the video! :)
