Power BI IT Spend Analysis: Track Actual vs Plan + Visualize Historical Trend in Chart Tooltips
Step by step tutorial to recreate line & stacked column chart with tooltips from IT Spend Analysis Power BI Sample Report / Dashboard Available for download in Microsoft Power BI Learning Portal or from my website.
When I recently came across this IT spend analysis report from the Microsoft learning portal, I was immediately impressed by the simple line chart and bar chart combination, which shows actual spend vs budget/plan spend by IT department. What was most impressive was that when you hover around the bar chart, another line charts appear, which allows us to immediately visualize the historical spend trend for each department. The title of the tooltip was also dynamic !!! It changes as you hover around across different bar chart. What an amazing way of using Tooltips to illustrate historical trend and adding more insights for the users.
Thus why I was excited to rebuild this report, in particular the bar chart and line chart combo with dynamic Tooltips chart from scratch.
I did encounter some hiccups along the way and I have included work around tips in this video tutorial which will hopefully help you to iron out difficulties that you may encounter along the way:
Here are the 8 steps required to recreate this report in Power BI Report / Dashboard
Step 1 Reviewing the Power BI data model
Step 2 Reviewing the relevant measures in Power BI
Step 3 Creating the line and stacked column chart
Step 4 Adding & formatting data label of your Power BI visuals
Step 5 Creating the tooltip page to your Power BI visual
Step 6 Linking up the tooltip to the bar/line chart combo in your Power BI Report / Dashboard
Step 7 Adding a region slicer to your Power BI Report
Step 8 Sense checking the chart in your Power BI Report / Dashboard
Hope you enjoy this Power BI video tutorial, learn something new and get inspired to use Tooltips with charts and dynamic titles in your next Power BI report. See you next time.
