DIXIT DOMINUS (HWV 232) "Gloria Patri" (final movement); conducted by Z. Randall Stroope, performed by the OSU CONCERT CHORALE. Composed April 1707 by G.F. Handel at age 22, this is a contrapuntal tour de force and staggering display of technical difficulty. This final movement ("Gloria Patri") includes astonishing acrobatic fugues, pushed forward by counter subjects of unflagging energy, replete with octave-leaping "amens." Mozart said of Handel, "He understands effect better than any of us - when he chooses, he strikes like a thunderbolt!"
