9th INFANTRY DIVISION IN VIETNAM 1968 U.S. ARMY BIG PICTURE DOCUMENTARY 81974

This 1968 Big Picture TV-746 color film about the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam was presented by the U.S. Army. The soldier narrator holds a book about the 9th in WWII. A poster displays its patch (1:18-2:59). 1966, soldiers are inspected at Fort Riley. A soldier kisses his wife and children goodbye. Soldiers exercise on deck (3:10-3:50). Heavy equipment clears trees at Bear Cat base. 1st and 2nd Brigades march for Major General Eckhart. Soldiers move through jungle terrain. Clearings were made for helicopter drops. Viet Cong tunnels held weapons, ammunition, and a Communist flag (3:51-5:48). The Mekong Delta is shown. Dredges are used to make a dry base camp and landing strip. Soldiers patrol through rice paddies. One gets stuck in mud. Soldiers cross chest-high water. An air mattress floats gear. A poncho becomes a raft. Helicopters and M113 armored personnel carriers struggle in the mud (5:49-9:23). Soldiers return gunfire. Grenades are dropped into enemy tunnels. Medics treat a soldier. Sandbags are filled. General William Westmoreland visits. Soldiers cross waist-high water. Helicopters transport men, artillery, vehicles, and other helicopters (9:24-12:15). MEDCAP soldiers treat villagers. Cessna O-1 Bird Dogs marked Viet Cong areas with smoke (12:16-13:42). The Mobile Riverine Force under the Inland Waterways Task Force occupy posts. Soldiers lived on the USS Benewah (APB-35) and USS Colleton (APB-36). The USS Carronade (IFS-1) contained a machine shop. Supplies are delivered (13:43-15:29). Armored troop carriers (ATC) patrol the waterway. Shown is M-92-1. The command communications boat is the control center. The monitor landing craft has a 40mm and 20mm cannon, an 81mm mortar, and .50-caliber and .30-caliber machine guns. Barges are outfitted as M102 howitzer artillery platforms. Its 105mm shells are handled. Air mobile firing platforms are transported by CH-21C Shawnee helicopters (15:30-18:20). The Mobile Riverine Force gets ready to beach. Air Force jets pound the landing. Soldiers rush into the jungle. 155mm howitzers are brought by helicopter. Airborne reinforcements board a helicopter. Wounded are flown to hospital-equipped ships (18:21-20:15). Soldiers are rotated back to the ATCs and cleaned by fire hoses before a shower, food, rest, and relaxation. The ATC passes a native village and boats with villagers wearing conical hats. A Patrol Boat River (PBR) passes (20:16-21:25). The 9th Division’s Reliable Academy training included crossing water by rope and grenades. Major General O’Connor visits. The Republic of Vietnam soldiers are trained. Thailand’s Queen’s Cobra Regiment learns to use compasses and handle ambushes (21:26-23:21). Shown are the Long Range Patrol 50th Infantry Airborne sign, special beret, and shoulder patches. Their endurance obstacle training is shown. Camouflage makeup is applied. Soldiers are inserted into enemy territory by helicopter, patrol, and are picked back up (23:22-25:18). A small metal Christmas tree is opened. A 1960s woman wearing a short skirt and sleeveless knit top hands out Christmas cards (25:19-26:04). Soldiers fire in battle. A helicopter drops napalm. Viet Cong soldiers and weapons are captured. Soldiers patrol by boat and helicopter. Villagers hoe the ground (26:05-27:43). The “Old Reliables” poster is shown (28:22).
