Crestone Needle and Humboldt Peak Birthday Hike

Every year we hike a 14er for Mar’s birthday. This year we hiked 2 14ers! (Who says getting older slows you down?) We backpacked to South Colony Lakes where we set up base camp and then spent the next two days checking 2 off the list. The first 14er we hiked, or should we say climbed, was Crestone Needle, which was 3 miles round trip from the lake. It is a Class 3 trail and took us 7 hours total to climb up and down those 3 miles. The next day we hiked up Humboldt Peak which was 4 miles round trip from the lake. Luckily, this 14er was much easier to hike as we were a bit sore from the day before. Then, we packed up all of our gear and hiked back down to the trailhead. We were fortunate to have great weather, just a little bit of rain and no lightening!
