#8 Three Way (Tennessee)
While some mentalities might conjure up a more exotic origin for this city’s name, there’s actually a very practical explanation. Prior to the city’s incorporation, the area was known as “Three Way” because US Route 45 split three ways along its north-south bearing. Believe it or not, there has never been any debate about this town’s name.
#7 Cut and Shoot (Texas)
You’ll find this active location about 40 miles north of Houston … although whether it’s a town or a city is something you might have to ask the residents. The name doesn’t refer to film editing technique, although the exact origins are a but murky. In 1912 there was a community-wide dispute concerning the town’s only church, which nearly resulted in violence. When someone mentioned that they would take some action that included cutting and shooting, the name stuck. Like they say, don’t mess with Texas.
#6 Hooker (Oklahoma)
The city was actually named in honor of a local ox ranch foreman named John “Hooker” Threlkeld. Are you one of the people who got the wrong idea about this town’s name? The citizens of Hooker have a message for you. To address any negative connotations with their town, their official motto is, “It’s a location, not a vocation.”
#5 Puke (Albania … Poo-kuh)
The spelling might make you think of one thing … but the name might go down a little easier when it’s pronounced ‘Puka’ in Albanian. It’s a fairly new location in the northern part of the country, formed in 2015. At more than 2,700 feet above sea level, it occupies one of the highest elevations in Albania. High enough to make one want to ‘Puke’ (poo-kuh), maybe.
#4 Batman (Turkey)
We all know this famous character from the comic books and the movies … although we normally associate him with Gotham City. But it turns out the Dark Knight has lent his name to several towns and cities across the globe. Perhaps the best known example is the city of Batman, which is located in southeastern Turkey. It’s an oil town with a population of around 380,000 people. And it gained some attention when a former mayor threatened to sue Warner Brothers for the use of their city’s name in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Nothing came of that … but it’s worth noting that Batman University is located there … maybe that’s where Bruce Wayne got some of his training.
#3 Truth or Consequences (New Mexico)
That was actually the name of a popular radio game show in the 1950s. As part of a promotion, Ralph Edwards, the show’s host, announced that the program would air on its 10th anniversary from the first town that renamed itself after the game show. The residents of Hot Springs, NM were first to respond, and changed the name of their town to Truth or Consequences, NM. And Mr Edwards was true to his word … he visited the town for an annual broadcast each year for the next 50 years!
#2 Gotham (UK)
So we just told you about the city of Batman in Turkey. Now we can tell you about Batman’s city of Gotham. It’s located in Nottinghamshire England. But it’s not one of the Dark Knight’s hangouts since this is a village of about 1,600 people. And the name Gotham actually is derived from the Old English for “goat home” … Weird, we thought it would have something to do with bats.
#1 Head-Smashed-In-Buffalo-Jump (Canada)
This sounds more like a non-sequitur than it does the name of an actual location. But it does exist, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains northwest of Alberta, Canada. A ‘Buffalo Jump’ refers to a cliff formation historically used by Native Americans to hunt and kill plains bison. When the animals were driven over the cliff, they would break their legs, rendering them easy prey. It’s an ancient practice, and this particular site in Canada is estimated to date back some 6,000 years! As for ‘Head Smashed In’ … that is said to refer to a young Native American hunter who was watching the bison plunge to their doom when he himself was buried beneath the animals. When he was later found dead beneath the carcasses, it was with his ‘head smashed in.’ The more you know, as they say.
