Teaching Science Through Reading: Main Idea & Details

This live planning session shows how we teach a science lesson on force and motion through reading using text, discussion, and hands-on experiences to build understanding.

Instead of separating subjects, we teach science through reading while intentionally building the skill of main idea and supporting details.

Reading is the tool.
Science is the content.
Understanding is the goal.

In this session, you’ll see how to:
- Teach a real science lesson using informational text
- Guide kids to identify the main idea as they learn new concepts
- Pull supporting details from both the text and what they observe
- Help reading skills stick because they’re tied to meaning

This is how we Live the Lesson:
We don’t pause learning to “do reading.”
We use reading to learn.

If your child struggles to explain what they read or remembers the activity but not the information, this session shows how to bring it together in a way that makes sense.
