Captains House Apartments - holiday rentals on Hydra Island Greece

Captain's House offers two neighbouring Hydra holiday apartments on a single level, overlooking Hydra harbour and all of the town spread below the terrace for a family of 4 in apartment 1 and a couple in apartment 2.

The quickest way up from the harbour to Captain's House is to take the steps on Sahinis Street. If you have suitcases though, it's best if you follow the mules bringing your luggage which take a less steep but slightly longer route.

In the evening, with the terrace shaded from the hot summer sun, it's like being the audience in a darkened theatre looking out at a beautifully light stage set. The view will make you gasp and smile. Wow, it certainly is curtains up for your Hydra holiday.

The house is on one level and has two parts. Apartment 1 at the front and apartment 2 at the back.

The sitting room of apartment 1 especially reflects the nautical heritage of the family who owns the house and their role played in the Greek War of Independence. For history lovers, Captain's House is very close to the Lazaros Kountoriotis Mansion where you can find much more information about this turbulent and heroic period of Hydra's past.

With its double ensuite and twin bedrooms, apartment 1 is well suited to a family of four. The windows from the sitting room and bedrooms overlook the terrace with the dramatic views to tempt you to go out and explore.

Though modest in size the galley kitchen with fridge and two-ring hotplate is well set up to enable you to make breakfast & simple meals on those days when you prefer to stay at home.

You get a different perspective of the town from the 100m2 terrace than you do when walking along the actual lanes of the town. Trying to work out the location of the places you visited during the day and looking for Hydra's landmarks in the evening, sipping your favourite sundowner is particularly entertaining from your loftier angle.

Renting apartment 2 is a good option for those who want to be close, but not that close, to friends and family staying next door. But it is independent enough with a separate entrance to be private if booked on its own. Apartment 2 is also a great winter rental for those who want to spend their days exploring and walking to come back to a cooked dinner at the time of year when the choice of Hydra restaurants for dining out is limited. Katia who manages the house will be happy to quote you a favourable winter rate especially for longer, out-of-season stays.

The pretty courtyard at the back of the house is very private and an attractive place to sit but you won't miss out on those all-important views. You'll find sitting on the side terrace at the top of the entrance steps still shows enough of the town and harbour to be a delight.

Walking down the steps brings you quickly to the West corner of the harbour.

The popular Veranda is the closest restaurant, literally below the house.

And your nearest swimming place is Spilia on the west corner of the harbour, where you can dive straight into the crystal clear sea. But if you prefer, the boats to the main beaches moor in front of the clock tower and it takes only 5 minutes to reach them from the house.
