Flock of Swans

A flock of swans or a bevy of swans or my favourite, a swan ballet. (Watch to the end when a mass take-off of the flock of swans occurs!) All terms for a group of young, immature swans. We came across this flock or bevy in Schipluiden in South Holland. We heard from a local that she never sees swans on this pond snd was amazed to see so many. (She walked past there daily) These mature cygnets or 1 year, some 2 year old swans are in a swans single group. A flock of not yet paired mute swans.

Mute swans generally mate for life. Their partnership is very important, not only for mating and rising the lovely cygnets, but also to work as a team against the various threats that exists for even these large waterbirds. It’s cool to think that maybe one of these young swans, was a cygnet at a nest near us, just months ago! Now they take the unique traits and skills they learned and look for a partner that matches or does the same.

We videotaped swan groups landing, but the mass take-off of about 25 young swans taking flight was a beautiful sight and sound! Can’t really call it a wedge of swans, more like a flock of swans, for surely they were just flying off to a meadow to munch on some grass.

It was also neat to see the courtship process starting for these young birds. The young swans would do the swan love dance and the dipping of the head in the water. But the really young swans, like the grey one, didn’t really understand as the other two started the courting dance.

A group of swans is called a bevy or a wedge in flight.

“A group of swans, also once game birds, is a wedge when they're in flight, likely because of the shape a group of swans takes in flight. And while we can call a group of swans a bevvy, a herd, a game, or a flight, they can only be a bank when they're on the ground.” Source: https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/a-drudge-of-lexicographers-presents-collective-nouns/a-melody-of-harpers-and-a-poverty-of-pipers
“The male is known as the cob and the female as the pen. ... Groups of immature swans and some older birds seeking a new mate or those too old to breed, often congregate in non-breeding flocks” Source: https://www.swanlifeline.org.uk/the-mute-swan/

They also call a group of swans a bevy or a ballet. A ballet of swans - I like that term! However, a flock of swans seems easiest to me.

Flock of swans!
