Wolfe Tones - COLLEEN BAWN . This is the vinyl version of the song which was released as the B - side of their 1983 single FAREWELL TO DUBLIN. Written by Byrne / Nagle / Warfield / Warfield and produced by Bill Somerville Large .

The song COLLEEN BAWN tells the true story in 1819 of the murder of a beautiful young girl ( not quite 16 ) Ellen Handly the daughter of a small farmer from Co Limerick who eloped with John Scanlon a young man in his twenties and who belonged to the ascendancy . However he soon tired of his new bride and with the marriage also frowned upon by his family because of the difference in their social standings he arranged her murder with the help of his servant Stephen Sullivan who took the young girl out on a boat trip on the river Shannon and there , shot her dead and dumped her body overboard tied to a stone . Both men disappeared before her body was finally discovered six weeks later by fishermen but were captured separately, tried and hung for the crime . A Celtic Cross ( now gone ) was later erected on Ellen's grave which bore the inscription : " HERE LIES THE COLLEEN BAWN , MURDERED ON THE SHANNON , JULY 14th 1819 . R. I. P."
