Actress Richa Chadha recently shared an interesting and eye-opening experience from early in her career. In an interview, she revealed that at just 21 years old, she was offered the role of Hrithik Roshan’s mother in a film even though he is older than her in real life. The actress admitted she felt upset about the offer, not out of ego, but because of what it represented in the film industry.

Richa explained that someone had told the casting director she was convincing in older roles, especially after her performance in Gangs of Wasseypur. Without much thought, the role was offered to her. However, she later reflected that the part eventually went to a talented senior actress, which she felt was the right decision. According to Richa, giving such roles to younger actors and artificially ageing them on screen is unfair on multiple levels.

She pointed out that this practice not only limits opportunities for older actors, whose roles are already scarce, but also sidelines young performers by pushing them into age-inappropriate characters too soon. She believes it reflects a deeper issue of ageism and sexism within both the film industry and society.

Talking about Gangs of Wasseypur, Richa said she never felt singled out for playing an older character there because the entire cast’s storyline spanned decades. Many actors in the film, including Manoj Bajpayee and others, portrayed characters across different age stages. But in her case outside that film, the focus was unfairly placed on ageing her for roles.

Richa was last seen in Fukrey 3 and will next appear in Anubhav Sinha’s Abhi Toh Party Shuru Hui Hai.
