When it comes to heat transfer businesses, there are two ways to go. You can either outsource your designs and only own a heat press, or you can print your own designs in house with a sublimation or a white toner transfer printer.

In case you weren’t sure how it works, after the design is printed using one of these printers, the heat press then adheres the design to the garment.

If you’re considering starting a printing business with heat transfer, we’ve got three reasons that will help you make the decision and take the leap.

#1 Heat transfer is affordable and easy
Printing with a heat press is one of the easiest printing methods to learn and the most affordable compared to screen printing and DTG.
It’s great for beginners and people looking to expand their embroidery businesses to add variety to their products and service catalogs. Because of its small learning curve, it’s the perfect side business, no matter your profession because it’s mess free and doesn’t take up much space in your home or office.
After learning how to use the machine, all you have left to master are the correct temperatures and press times you need to use on different garments and fabrics.

#2 Heat transfer is extremely versatile.
Considering the amount of different heat presses, from mug presses to plate presses, there is a wide variety of products and garments that can be customized.
It really opens up a lot of doors for customer apparel shows to expand, gain new clients, grow your revenue and become a one-stop shop for your clients.
#3 Low startup costs and high profit margins
First off, heat transfer works great for smaller orders between 1-50 pieces.
If you’re printing your own designs in house, all you’ll need to get started in this business is a heat press, transfer printer, software compatible with the printer, and supplies like ink and transfer paper.

Let’s break down the costs in order to show you how affordable it really is:

Typical heat presses for T-shirts will cost you anywhere from $200-$1,500 depending on the high-end features the heat press you’re interested in has, such as auto open options. On average, you can find a great heat press with everything you need for about $800.

The printer, however, is where you’ll find the bulk of the startup cost for your heat transfer printing business.

But at Ricoma, we offer an all-inclusive white toner transfer printing package with A HEAT PRESS, software, toner, transfer paper, training and support already included for approximately $5,000.

Buying these items separately can cost you a whole lot more. With our package, you can secure 0% financing and pay as little as $139 a month for all these items.

Let’s talk profit:

A typical wholesale T-shirt can cost you around $2-$3.

Transfer paper and ink can cost around $3 per shirt.

That means an average shirt cost you about $5.50 to create.

On average, most shirts with a full-color custom print easily sell for around $20 per shirt if sold individually (we always suggest adjusting your prices for bulk orders to entice your customers) but that leads to a profit of approximately $15 per shirt! That’s a 75% profit margin. This means you only have to sell about 10 shirts a month to cover the cost of your monthly payment.

Remember, heat presses aren’t only great as standalone products. You can incorporate heat presses into any custom apparel business to create multi-media products. Heat presses work great to adhere embroidered patches to your garments, press your shirt after a DTG print and so much more. The possibilities are really endless.

Considering how affordable it is, how easy it is and how quickly you can see a return on your investment when starting a heat transfer business, we hope these reasons will make your decision a lot easier!
