Headaches, Chronic Pain and Hydrocephalus

Many people with hydrocephalus experience chronic pain and other physical discomforts. Headaches are more common when an adolescent or young adult has a shunt. It is not always due to shunt malfunctions and may not be amenable to shunt manipulation. This session will discuss why patients with hydrocephalus may develop chronic headaches and pain associated with their shunt. Attendees will learn about different types of headaches in patient’s with shunts, what causes them and the need for them to understand how different headaches may affect them individually, distinguishing “just a headache” from something more serious.
