As a high-school football player, he managed to bench press 500 lb. Later, as a collegiate football player at Western Illinois University, he developed a 700-lb. back squat, and a more than 600-lb. deadlift. For the 270-pound athlete, the heavy weights were easy. After graduating from college, he started looking for another competitive outlet. He found CrossFit at the start of the 2012 Reebok CrossFit Games Open.

Sam Dancer was an individual rookie when he took 32nd at the 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games, but he had the reputation of a veteran. After taking 12th at the North Central Regional in 2013, he helped team CrossFit Conjugate to a second-place finish at the 2014 Reebok CrossFit Games, where he famously deadlifted 655 lb. In 2015, he returned to the individual competition with a 10th-place finish at the Central Regional before making his individual Games debut in 2016. Beloved by fans as much for his fun-loving personality as his strength—he often paints his nails for competitions for he anti bully/pro love message—Dancer, a former collegiate football player, owns QTown CrossFit in Quincy, Illinois, with his wife Jennifer Dancer where they have partnered with the Area 11 Special Olympics program to offer training to people with Down syndrome.and other special needs.

If you love the Reebok CrossFit Games, odds are that you’ve wondered how on Earth Sam Dancer is so strong.

Dancer came in second place at the 2014 Reebok CrossFit® Games when he was competing as part of CrossFit Conjugate, an affiliate based in Ohio. In 2016, he qualified and competed as an individual.

He’s been known to deadlift 655 pounds (297 kilograms) in competition — albeit with some pretty significant hitching.

In a lot of ways, this is a delight to behold. The man winds up front squatting 455 pounds (206 freaking metric kilograms) and then goes on to power clean 315 pounds (142.8 kilograms) and snatch 265 pounds (120 kilograms).
